makes it so easy to
donate
online 24/7 using your credit card or ACH (checking account
debit) to the SRC. If you have an existing PayPal
account (such as from using EBay in the past), simply send
the funds to: "treasurer@spotsygop.com".
Of course, you can still contribute by
mailing in a check
too.
Donations are
greatly appreciated, but are not tax deductible.
SRC, its members
and volunteers are always happy to participate in and help
promote community events and fundraisers for a myriad of
causes. A great way to
donate financially is to attend
our next GOP meeting or fundraiser
we're participating in.
We do fundraising events for our own organization, charities and candidates for public office year-round!
If you want to
'get something' for the money you give to the SRC, events
are great ways to get to know us and discuss what your
generosity gets applied toward. Usually held in a
family-friendly and fun
setting, we almost always have food at these events– so
bring your wallets, entire family, good spirits, and
especially your appetite!
Three counties were formed in 1720 in the
Rappahannock River
watershed upstream from the Fall Line - King George,
Hanover, and Spotsylvania. Settlement in the area was
spurred after
Governor Spotswood led an expedition in 1716
to the Shenandoah River, and by his efforts to negotiate
peace with the native Americans.
His expedition was quite
a party, with numerous toasts of brandy and claret. It was
celebrated afterwards by Spotswood granting miniature golden
horseshoes to the participants (though King George made him
pay for them). Spotswood knew how to attract buyer attention
in the days before digital billboard signs cluttered modern
highways.
Spotswood's support for settling the uplands, including
negotiations with the native Americans for peace, stimulated
growth in an area in which he personally had been patenting
thousands of acres. Spotswood recruited refugees from the
Palatinate in Germany, the original kingdom of George I's
grandfather, in order to operate his iron mines at Germanna.
Spotswood took over as Lieutenant Governor (the formal
Governor was the Earl of Orkney, who pocketed half the pay
but never actually visited Virginia) in 1710. He progressed
through several stages of disputes with the House of
Burgesses and the Council of State, finally ending up as an
ally of the large merchant-planter families emerging as the
Virginia aristocracy.
There was a telling moment when it became clear that
Spotswood was no longer seeking to fight the large
landowners. In April 29, 1720, he had been arguing loudly
for two hours with Commissary Blair and Philip Ludwell, when
he suddenly changed his tone and requested real friendship
instead of conflict. Spottswood hosted a grand dinner at the
new Governor's Palace, musicians played, toasts were drunk,
and peace broke out.
When it was clear that Spottswood was about to be
replaced by a new Lieutenant Governor, the members on the
Council of State helped him double his landholdings by
patenting to him 40,000 acres in Spotsylvania County.
[Others received 179,000 acres at the same time...] Rather
than returning to England at the end of his term like his
predecessors, Spottswood stayed in Virginia - with his
85,000 acres to manage.
Years later we had a little revolt against England you
may have heard about, and the rest as they say, is history.

Youth
Republicans ("Y.R.'s") of Spotsylvania
County keep busy throughout the year and are very friendly,
highly reliable, energetic and helpful young men and
women! We are so proud of the hard work they do
for the Party and the selfless giving of their time and
energy. Spotsylvania is blessed to have such a strong
group of future leaders rising through our ranks while
learning how the core of democracy functions as they
grow into an adult leadership role of self-reliance,
responsibility and civic duty.
Occasionally, we have paid jobs/duties for our
most reliable and dedicated Y.R.'s– and that looks great
on a resume' or college application to say you've
participated in your community's election/political
process.
Our
bright Y.R.'s not only stand out among their
all-to-often apathetic peers, they seem to excel in life
too! It also never hurts to have earned a letter
of recommendation from an elected county or state
official either to back up your new skill set.
Employers
are always looking for that special new employee that
stands out among the crowd of applicants.
Y.R.'s help in every facet of a
meeting or campaign from helping gather required
signatures to qualify a candidate before an election
season, all the way through to election day including
helping run the polls and count votes!
Junior
R's ("J.R.'s") of Spotsylvania County are equally as helpful and
important to our party as the Y.R.'s. J.R.'s,
often in elementary or middle school, can make a day of
adult volunteering at a poll a lot less stressful for a
parent who may otherwise be unable or unwilling to be
away from their child.
A maturing young person like this is
often bursting with energy and happy to do the more
repetitive tasks like stuffing envelopes; usually with
fewer complaints than many adults! While working
with mom or dad, or nearby with other adults, parents
can observe their youngster's interpersonal skills and
help improve them as needed. Encouraging a J.R. to
participate with the process we Americans hold dear is a
great way to ensure your child grows up knowing and
understanding the core Republican principals and how
they affect their lives.
J.R.'s
also serve as a great proving test for our Y.R.'s
leadership skills when given tasks or deadlines to meet
that are beyond what one Y.R. can handle. Since
often they are the younger siblings of our Y.R.'s, who
are working on campaign duties or events, they help
teach patience and responsibility to everyone involved
and foster teamwork skills among families during "crunch
times". Happy families who set an example of
togetherness will help earn votes at polls or while
campaigning door-to-door.
Republican
strengths
include our beliefs in a system of family values and
strong ethical code of conduct and behavior.
Nothing illustrates these values more than raising a
whole family by good example.
Since our children really are our
future, we all believe it's important that adult
Republicans remember to take the time to train our
successors. By incorporating Y.R's and J.R.'s
actively into our party, we help keep our party growing
in numbers and keep its ideals and values sustainable.
Our Republican leaders take very
active roles in the communities they serve, especially
when it comes to children's needs. From financial
fund raising, organizing community awareness campaigns,
passing laws/regulations/policies that protect our
children, to simply volunteering their time, energy and
expertise whenever possible– Spotsylvania Republicans
care about kids!
